I set out recently to make a short, lightweight woods gun for deer. Being fond of the .44 Magnum in the Contender, I decided we would go that route. I decided to stub an existing factory TC bbl for the project. The blank used was a Green Mtn stainless .44 blank. The length was going to be short as I wanted an easy packing, fast on target rig. I decided on 8" as it would give me roughly 6" of bbl taking out the length of the chamber. Should get velocity on par with a 6" revolver or a tad more from the closed breech. After the stub was cut, bored and threaded, I went to work on the blank. I gave her an 11° target crown. Afterwards, the shank was turned and threaded. After facing the breech, the extractor notch was milled. That left porting the barrel. I put four 1/8" ports at 12 o'clock on the muzzle. An order to 4D reamer rentals later, I had a Clymer floating pilot reamer in hand. With the chamber work completed we were set. I opened both the mount screw holes in the bbl and the Burris mount and we were ready for finish. I used Graphite Black Cerakote on all the metal and got her together. Lastly was the fore end. I worked out a piece of camo laminate to match the Dave Dolin grip. Here was the bbl after the lathe work...... And lastly, the finished product...... Should make a dandy whitetail rig!

Looks great Jeremy, I have never been a fan of stubby Contenders but you might be changing my mind
